Part of our ethos at e5 is to be open and share knowledge where possible. Gaining experience in other bakeries has and remains an important way for our teams to exchange ideas and strengthen ties with others who share similar values within and outside of our community. It’s important for us to offer that opportunity to other people here at e5. We do however receive a huge number of stage requests and it is impossible for us to accommodate all of them. We prioritise those who share our passion for sustainability, inclusivity, diversity (both environmentally and in a human way) and who show genuine curiosity. Hosting stages takes time and resources from our hard-working teams and sometimes the day-to-day means we cannot afford to spare this time. Please be understanding if we cannot accommodate you and don’t let it deter you on your baking/pastry/farming/coffee journey.

We will try to reply as quickly as possible.

Please note that the stages we offer at e5 are unpaid work placements. However we work hard to make sure the experience is mutually beneficial and stagiaires finish their placements with us having learned a lot.

FOH / Shop Manager - E5 Poplar

Start Date: ASAP

Salary: ~32k+ benefits (Negotiable)

Location: Poplar, E14

Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week

Description:

We’re looking for an experienced barista and team leader to manage the FOH operations at E5 Poplar. In this role, you’ll ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the café, maintain high standards for coffee and service, and keep the shop well-stocked and efficient. Strong management skills and a passion for fostering a close-knit, community-focused team are key.

About Us:

E5 is a bakery with a mission grounded in sustainability and ethics. We work with heritage grains, mill our own flour, and grow our own wheat and produce in Suffolk. At our Poplar site, we roast coffee on-site, sourcing from small-scale farms that prioritize sustainable farming practices and fair pay.

We produce all of our cakes and pastries in-house, using mostly organic ingredients, and serve fresh, hearty lunches daily. Working alongside Poplar Union, a community arts charity, we actively contribute to the local community. Our team in Poplar operates like a family, and we are seeking someone who values that dynamic.

You're Role:

  • Team Leadership & Management: Manage the FOH team, ensuring high standards for coffee, customer service, and café operations. You’ll oversee staff rotas, hiring, training, and time card checks to ensure the café is always adequately staffed.
  • FOH & General Management: Oversee daily operations of the café and manage stock, equipment, and general administrative duties. You’ll have dedicated admin time to manage rotas, handle hiring and training, and support staff development.
  • Community Focus: A passion for community work is a big plus. You’ll collaborate with Poplar Union and help foster a warm, welcoming environment for staff and customers alike.
  • Growth & Improvement: You’ll have the opportunity to bring forward ideas to enhance our service, operations, and offerings. As we are an ever-evolving business, there’s plenty of room for professional growth and development alongside the company.
  • Social Media Engagement: If you have an interest in social media, you’ll have the opportunity to post regular content on our Instagram, sharing updates and engaging with our community.

Requirements:

  • Experience Leading a Team: Strong leadership and management experience, with at least 2 years in hospitality.
  • Barista Skills: Proven experience as a barista, with the ability to maintain high standards in coffee preparation.
  • Passion for Sourdough: A good understanding—or at least a passion—for sourdough bread and artisanal baking.
  • Social Media Interest: While not required, an interest in social media and posting content on our Instagram is a preferred quality.

Benefits:

    • Perks on the Job: Enjoy discounts on all of our retail items, plenty of free coffee during your shifts, and a free, nourishing meal each day.
    • Community & Socials: Regular staff socials and events connect our Poplar team with our other site in Hackney, fostering a larger sense of community.
    • Growth Opportunities: E5 is a growing business, and we’re committed to providing staff with opportunities to develop their skills and grow with us.
