We are returning to the mountains of Southern Spain and we’d like you to join us!
We are pleased to announce that for the fifth consecutive year we’re returning to Las Chimeneas, in the heart of the Alpujarras.
This year we’re offering two full days of sourdough bread making; the first is more of an introduction to sourdough and the second day delves into more advanced recipes; both days involve a range of techniques.
In addition there is a half day pizza workshop using a traditional wood-fired oven.
Alongside the bread and pizza classes there will be 3 days set aside for exploring the local area through a selection of curated trips by our hosts David and Emma, although of course if you just feel like striking off and exploring on your own that’s perfectly fine. Best of all, we are going in early April, so the bountiful Spanish Spring – with all its wildflowers, blossom, birds and bees – will be coming into bloom!

Seven nights’ accommodation and full board (breakfast, light lunch/picnic and three course evening meal) at Las Chimeneas, Mairena (WWW.LASCHIMENEAS.COM).
A visit to the Mairena olive mill for a pressing demonstration and a talk about local olive farming and oil production.
A visit to the ancient neighbouring church of Juba, site of a mosque and synagogue with a talk abut Andalusian/Moorish history.
A tour of Las Chimeneas’ organic farm (for fruit and veg picking as well as foraging) and an introduction to ancient watering systems and local farming techniques.

Transfers to and from Granada, Almeria or Malaga airports.
The focus of the retreat will be the chance to take part in the two workshops, lead by one of e5’s experienced bakers. The classes will cover ciabatta, bagels, light rye and country sourdough and pizza bases as well as discussions on sustainability, milling and types of grain which can be used.
But week isn’t just about bread! Mairena, the small village that will host the class and our guests is nestled beneath the Sierra Nevada National park.
Guided walks are included along with plenty of time to roam the hills yourself searching for ibex, brids of prey and the rich mediterranean flora.
Other foodie pursuits can include a visit to the Mairena olive oil mill for a tour and talk about local olive oil production; fruit and veg picking Las Chimeneas organic gardens.
Learn about ancient Moorish irrigation systems which are still in use today, along with local farming techniques and a cookery demonstration provided by chefs from the Las Chimeneas restaurant.
On top of all this, other activities included in the price are a visit to the ancient neighbouring church of Jubar, site of a mosque and synagogue, with talk about Andalus history and Moorish legacy as well as a couple of short walking tours across the Alpujarran countryside with local guides.
Accommodation for seven nights will be provided by Las Chimeneas, an elegant collection of village houses that has been welcoming guests to the Alpujarra since 1998. There are nine lovely rooms, all with fabulous views across the hills to the sea in the far distance, with plenty of nooks and crannies to contemplate the days teaching and activities (or siesta). Full board for the week will be provided by their restaurant which focuses on quality, freshly made seasonal produce.
